I began my career at a telecom company as a junior product marketing manager while I was still a student. It was my first real job. Back then, I didn’t know much about the role or how salaries worked.
During my first salary negotiation, I asked to pay me X. My manager looked at me and laughed, saying:
“Egis, our HR won’t let us pay that little, so we’ll give you Y.”
I was thrilled to receive a salary much higher than I’d expected, but I couldn’t help wondering: How much should I really be asking for? Had I missed out on a major opportunity?
When my next salary review came around, I decided to aim higher. My logic was simple: if I had asked for way too little the first time, I needed to ask for significantly more to avoid being laughed at again.
So I boldly requested double my current salary. The outcome? My manager laughed again and replied:
“Egis, only super seniors earn that much.”
It took getting laughed at twice to teach me the importance of doing thorough research before negotiating. Since then, I’ve never been caught off guard.
The challenge with Customer Value Management positions is that they’re relatively rare, so there aren’t hundreds of job listings to easily gauge salary ranges.

The table below summarizes annual base salary ranges in USD at four seniority levels (Junior, Mid-level, Senior, Head of Department) for each region. Note that these figures exclude bonuses and benefits and are normalized to USD for comparison.
